You don't have to know what's wrong to call.
Hollin is a counselling practice on Priory Street in York. Start with a free 15-minute call with the counsellor you'd actually see, by phone or video. No forms, and nothing to prepare.

Individual therapy, couples counselling, and help with anxiety and burnout. In the room or online, on weekday evenings until 8pm.
The first-floor room, Priory Street
Most first calls start with one sentence.
Here are four we hear often, and the work each one usually leads to. You don't need to know which is yours before you ring.
“I don't know where to start.”
Individual therapy
Fifty minutes a week to talk through whatever is going on, including the things you can't yet put a name to.
50 minutes, weekly
from £70
“We keep having the same argument.”
Couples counselling
With Sam, for couples who want to stop going round in circles, including couples who aren't sure they want to stay together.
75 minutes
from £100
“I'm fine. I'm just tired all the time.”
Anxiety and burnout
A structured piece of work with Leah over eight sessions, for the kind of tired that sleep doesn't fix.
8 sessions
from £70 a session
“I can't get into town in the daytime.”
Online sessions
Any of the above by video or phone, at the same fees. Evenings until 8pm, and Saturday mornings are online only.
Video or phone
the same fees
Reduced fees
A few places from £45 a session, for students and people on low incomes. Ask about them on the call.
Cancelling
Give us 48 hours' notice, or the session is charged.
Paying
By card or bank transfer, after each session.
Whatever else moves, this hour doesn't.
Week 1
The first session
Fifty minutes to say why you've come, in your own words. If it doesn't feel right, you don't owe us a second.
Week 6
Same day, same time, same room
In the room on Priory Street or online. Your week can move around it; this hour stays where it is.
Week 12, or whenever you're ready
You decide when to stop
Some people come for eight weeks, some for a year. When it's time to finish, we plan the ending together.

Everything else
No waiting room. No one on the stairs.
We're in a Georgian terrace on Priory Street, ten minutes' walk from York station, and we've arranged it so that coming here is as easy as it can be.
Fifteen minutes apart
Sessions start fifteen minutes apart, so you won't pass another client on the stairs.
One flight up
The room is on the first floor. On Thursdays there's a ground-floor room for anyone who would rather not climb.
A clock you can see
It hangs where we can both see it, so you always know how long is left.
Tea, water, tissues
They're already in the room. You don't have to ask.
It stays in the room
The only exception is if we believe you or someone else is at serious risk, and even then we'd talk to you first wherever we can.
Short notes, locked away
Kept on paper in a locked cabinet, and destroyed seven years after we finish.
Who you'd talk to.
Three counsellors, all in regular clinical supervision. Helen opened Hollin in 2017. On the free call you speak to the one you'd see, so you know who will be in the room.
Helen Marsh
Founder, counselling since 2009
Eight years as a university counsellor before she opened Hollin. Individual therapy, bereavement and big life changes.
In the room, Monday to Thursday
Sam Okafor
Couples counselling
Couples, and individuals who want to talk about a relationship. Sam doesn't take sides, and won't tell you whether to stay.
Tuesday and Thursday evenings, in the room or online
Leah Dunn
Anxiety and burnout
A nurse for twelve years before she retrained, so she knows shift work, and the kind of tired that sleep doesn't fix.
Online, evenings and Saturday mornings
“I'd put off ringing for a year. The fifteen minutes turned out to be the easy part.”
Claire, Acomb
“We came in barely speaking. Sam never once took a side.”
Tom and Ellie, Heworth
Book your free fifteen minutes.
Pick a time, and the counsellor you'd see will ring you or send a video link. If it doesn't feel right, that's fine: we'll suggest someone else if we can.
